This will probably be my most controversial article as it deals with topics in both wrestling and society that people try to avoid talking about. Of course I'm talking about TNA terminating the contract of nationally syndicated radio host and mid-card(or lower card) talent/manager Bubba The Love Sponge. This was a case going back to January that was one huge overreaction with a snowball effect. As in any story you must start at the beginning.
First lets look at the definition of overreact(ion) from dictionary.com
o·ver·re·act
intr.v. o·ver·re·act·ed, o·ver·re·act·ing, o·ver·re·acts To react with unnecessary or inappropriate force, emotional display, or violence. o'ver·re·ac'tion n., o'ver·re·ac'tive adj.
It started in January after the earthquake in Haiti. The news of course having not much else to cover all decended on what was truly a natural disaster and tragedy. Celebrities tweeted, reacted by setting up telethons, and people gave generously to many organizations that were or at least claimed to be helping the people of Haiti. Bubba however on his radio show questioned this by saying that Haiti knew they built their mud huts on a fault line and that their government was one of the most corrupt in the world that had a history of stealing most of the aid money in the past. Also he brought up the fact that anytime one of these major tragedy's happen that it takes money away from other worthwhile charities at home. He was stating that the media and America in general was "overreacting" to the relief efforts, especially by giving money without doing due diligence in to where their money was going. This has been shown to be a wise statement in hindsight with some charities not being able to account for how the donations were spent, such as Wyclef Jean's charity, http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2010/0115102wyclef1.html
This led to Bubba's first "overreaction" when he posted on Twitter "F Haiti..." before going into a more detailed reason in multipe tweets that echoed what is written in the previous paragraph. This is the real disadvantage with Twitter's 140 character limit, it enhances Oui's first law of communication, if a message can be misunderstood it will be. Word got back to Awesome Kong who had been doing fundraising for the relief effort. This led to her first "overreaction" where she ambushed Bubba and attacked him physically backstage at TNA. No matter what you think about someones opinion you should never attack them physically, not in this country that is founded on the right for one to speak freely no matter what the subject or opinion. This of course led to her eventual release from TNA Wrestling as well as other disciplinary action. Despite some wrestling fan's views, this was not an "overreaction" by TNA. If you hit a co-worker in your workplace not only will you be fired on the spot, but you will also more than likely be facing criminal charges and a possible civil lawsuit. In that case Awesome Kong was treated fairly.
Next was another overreaction by Awesome Kong when she filed a lawsuit and motion for discovery against AT&T. In the filing she alleged that someone had prank called her at 5am spewing racist epitephts along with other threats. She stated that she believed that this person was Bubba The Love Sponge, as she said the person identified himself as Bubba and stated she heard a digital static sound before the person came on the line. (This is highly unlikely as the equipment that allows callers to be put on the air only will send that sound when one calls the station and not when the station calls out.) Since nothing came out of that suit I'm assuming either the phone records showed that it was not a number associated with Bubba or the call never happened. (Then it could also be that its still pending in court).
This is what I'm assuming continued the "overreaction snowball" where Bubba setup Awesome Kong for the interview with Tampa radio personality Cowhead this past week. Bubba honestly should have let things go as Kia was pretty much gone from TNA. The lawsuit did contain very damaging allegations that were false, though once accused, much like Kobe Bryant or the Duke Lacrosse team, you can truly never be innocent in the minds of some people. So Bubba and Cowhead setup a radio storyline where he and Cowhead didn't like each other and Cowhead had invited Awesome Kong to be on his afternoon radio show. The initial plan was for Awesome Kong to be in studio for the interview but she decided to do a phone interview instead. Bubba had planned for her to confront her in person about what she would have said and did say in the interview. Its probably best for Bubba that this did not happen as who knew how things could have escalated. Bubba did start asking her tough questions which caused Kia to overreact to him being there, Bubba got heated as well, calling her a "black bitch" before she told him to "kiss her black ass". Phone call ended when she hung up.
Then in the overreaction chain the writer on the Baltimore Sun website dropped an overreaction bomb on the situation by writing that Bubba said things that couldn't be printed and continued on with racist comments towards Kia. This caused the wrestling Internet community, most who hated Mr. Clem even though they have never met him, to completely overreact and begin tweeting Dixie Carter, president of TNA, to fire Bubba for his racist tirade on Awesome Kong. TNA overreacted not only by terminating Bubba but in the way that they did it. Releasing a one sentence article on their website and sending out a tweet that he was immediately terminated. This is not the way they should have handled this. If they wanted Bubba to no longer work for the company they should have asked him to resign from the company or simply not use him for a few weeks. The reason? It goes back to my original article "The Six Sides of Bubba" where I described Bubba's value to TNA even though he is far from a main eventer he brings a loyal group of people to the company through the millions of people that listen to his radio program and the thousands that follow him on Twitter. A rule of marketing is that for positive news about your company or product you may get 10-30% word of mouth to spread the word, however for a negative you will get 70-90% word of mouth to avoid your product or business. The "Bubba Army" should have been expected by TNA to react the way they have and tell 7-10 people each to avoid TNA. This is why Bubba resigning gracefully would have been the best result for TNA. However, they went the route of fire and release through the internet, which seems to be a pattern with TNA with the releases of Tara & Jim Cornett in the past.
This is where the overreaction really began to go crazy. The anti-Bubba marks overreacted and began taunting Bubba on his twitter page calling him everything but a human. This is a guy that is simply an announcer in the company, its not like TNA released RVD for promoting drug use in his promos. This led to the next overreaction from the "Bubba Army" who not only began attacking the people who were attacking Bubba but also called Dixie Carter names that were completely inappropriate and unnecessary. This viscous cycle of overreaction was enhanced by comments of Awesome Kong as well as Bubba's friend and producer Brent Hadley, though he was only reacting to some of the tweets to Bubba's twitter page that were calling him a racist among other things. In fact by not attacking Bubba I've also been labled a racist which is beyond ridiculous. Not only that other twitter users threatened to kill Bubba. My message to you is let it go, its just an announcer and radio host, its not like you are going to be personally affected by any of this. Kong went on to tweet that Bubba should have let things go, however when she was thinking that Cowhead was on her side she didn't think twice to go ahead and talk down Bubba over the same incident. So she should have taken her own advice and during the interview said I'll talk about my wrestling career in Ring of Honor but don't want to talk about Bubba as that is part of my past, etc.
This will all be talked about on Bubba's show on Monday. Hopefully he will end the overreaction snowball and avalanche, however that usually doesn't create good radio. I do think he will at least try to get people to quit attacking Dixie Carter on a personal and rude level that some were doing on Twitter. Hopefully this will all blow over soon and I can write about awesome matches or stupid angles, instead of situations like this that could have been avoided if people weren't over sensitive and didn't overreact.
You always hear about the bias in the mainstream media whether its the liberal left on MSNBC or the conservative right on Fox News. However, I have not seen as much bias against one company or individual as I have with other "major" wrestling websites against TNA Wrestling. Now if you have listened to our podcast you would know that both me and especially my partner Dave will criticize TNA over what sometimes seen as their lack of direction or storytelling in some of the angles. However, what I have read on the PW Torch and Pro Wrestling Insider this week was not objective criticism as it was unfounded attack or marking out for Vince McMahon and the WWE.
For example on the PW Torch Impact this week was described as "tawdry" multiple times. This was a word that was used by Vince McMahon recently describing the TNA product. The reason given was the high risks in the ladder match, chair shots, and use of glass bottle on RVD. Yes I do agree that TNA is on the edge of using blood for the sake of using blood sometimes, however there was no blood in the ladder match, just a bad spot when Angle tripped over the top rope. That same move can happen in Vince's PG wrestling and there were a few rough spots at WrestleMania and don't forget that former WWE Diva Candice Michelle was injured for tripping/falling off the top rope in a match on Raw.
On PW Insider there was a review of Impact that included backhanded compliments and unrealistic critiques. For example the author wrote that the wrestling was good but unfortunately there wasn't 128 minutes of it so that left a lot of talking. 1. I'm not sure what show he was watching as there was more wrestling on this weeks Impact than there have been in weeks. 2. It is impossible to have 128 minutes of wrestling on the show as you must have commercials in order for Spike TV & TNA to justify running the show. You need interviews which have been a part of wrestling going back to the days of Gorgeous George, in order to advance story lines. 3. If you take a stopwatch with your to watch wrestling then you really need a life. On a recent review the author at first acts like Impact & Raw were neck and neck but then buried Impact when taking the segments as if they had aired in real time.
My point is if you dislike Raw or Smackdown fine, have a legitimate reason to dislike it. For example I hate the Orlando Jordan gimmick as it seems to be pointless and stupid. However I am not going to criticize them for having a 4 sided ring, not having 100% in ring action, or by calling them "tawdry". Same thing with WWE. Both companies have stupid angles and gimmicks, however both shows also have decent matches. TNA however seems to be hated for Bubba The Loves Sponge, no six sided ring, and too much violence rather than legitimate reasons of confusing stipulations, lack of consistent storytelling, and the one time overuse of aging stars (ie Nasty Boys). Yet Raw seems to get a pass for horrible guest celebs and a midget that has long overstayed his usefulness in Hornswoggle.
Am I a TNA mark? Yes, admittedly I am as I have watched their show going back to the weekly PPV days, through Fox Sports, and on Spike TV. However, I will criticize them and WWE when it is appropriate but will also give them props on the things they are doing right, such as Angle/Anderson, AJ Styles character development, Desmond Wolfe, etc. In the WWE, the biggest hangup is the return to some of the cartoonish gimmicks of the late 80s and early 90s. However you could not call yourself a wrestling fan if you did not appreciate Michaels vs Undertaker at WrestleMania 26.
So hopefully the other wrestling websites will take a more objective look when they review and especially report on TNA and/or WWE. I will always try to do so on this website and on the podcast. Do you think there is biased coverage against TNA in the wrestling media? Please leave your comments below.
Shawn Michaels career is for now over as he retired after his rematch with The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI. However, he ended his career telling one of the best in-ring stories over the past 5 years. This story did not require announcers to put over the storyline, in fact this year's WrestleMania crew may have been the worse since WrestleMania II. This story was told over the course of three years, three different WrestleMania's with what happened in the ring and not something scripted by a writer but rather told by a performer.
The first match of this trilogy was from WrestleMania 24 with HBK vs Ric Flair retirement match. This match featured a lot of back and forth, some very good spots from Michaels, and it was the beginning chapter for what would become a 3 part story told in the ring over the next 2 WrestleManias. This chapter of the story was Michaels facing a friend who's career was on the line, at the end of the match Michaels was striking up the band, and for a second looked like he didn't want to finish Flair off with his finisher, however Flair urged him to do so, Michaels said I'm sorry then hit him with Sweet Chin Music to retire Flair from the WWE.
Fast forward 1 year and Michaels is now facing yet another WWE legend, The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXV. This time its a different story, he's not out to end Taker's career but to do one thing that no one has ever done, beat the Undertaker at WrestleMania and end his 16-0 streak. This match stole the show in its storytelling. There were numerous near falls, lots of back and forth, that told a story of one guy trying to do the impossible (hence the name Showstopper) against a guy who was undefeated. The ring work and storytelling was so great that as you watched it you forgot all the inside/backstage stuff you read about on the internet, you forget that the match is scripted and predetermined, and go back into the innocent time in your life when kayfabe still meant something and like a kid you believed that these two guys were in an actual competition where no one was for sure who would win. In the trilogy of these matches this was definitely the apex of the story as HBK came close but in the end was defeated by the Undertaker.
Finally at this year's WrestleMania XXVI, the rematch of HBK & The Undertaker completed the story. Shawn wanted to prove that he could defeat the Undertaker as he was close last year and Undertaker only agreed to the match with the retirement clause for the match. The end of course was that although once again close, The Undertaker still prevailed, yet like Michaels in the Flair match, Take did not want to finish off Shawn, though like Flair Michaels insisted that if he were to be beat that the Undertaker finish the job. The match was not as special as last years match however when taken as a whole these two and three matches tell a great story of a career that was one of the best in the history of Professional wrestling. The story of a guy that goes from ending one legendary career to having his own legendary career ended in similar fashion is a story of triumph, tragedy, and a end to one helluva career.
This week's Hawk's Nest will look at wrestlers on the current rosters on WWE & TNA that I'd cut. These fall into three categories, wrestlers to be cut becasue they aren't being utilized, wrestlers who are getting pushed but performing poorly, and wrestlers I can simply not stand.
First lets look at the Raw roster.
In the category of wrestlers to be cut because they aren't being utilized or being done so poorly:
Chavo Gurrero - honestly his biggest Raw moment in the last year was getting chopped by Bob Barker Katie Leah - Maybe she is new to the Raw roster but since Paul Burchill was cut, not sure she has a place Zach Ryder - don't really see a place for him since ECW is no more
In the category of those I simply can't stand:
Hornswoggle - has been on the roster way too long and now that WWE is PG oriented brings back too many cartoonish memories William Regal - booring audiences since 1992
On the Smackdown roster I would only cut those that I don't like since I am about a month behind on the DVR for Smackdown:
Jimmy Wang Yang - just a stupid gimick Kung Fu Naki - see above Rey Mysterio - he is by far the most overrated and over pushed peformer in profesional wrestling history. Also he brings up the passing of Eddie Gurrero more than Chavo & Vicki combined, just to get cheap pops.
TNA - as TNA adds wrestlers to their rosters, they are going to have to cut some in order to make room
In the category of underutilized:
Shark Boy - haven't seen him on TV in months Awesome Kong - although she is a current champion she's been off of TV for over a month, plus may be filing a frivilous lawsuit against Bubba the Love Sponge and possibly TNA, based on race. Kiyoshi - hasn't been used
In the category of performing poorly:
The Nasty Boyz - plus they aren't physically able to compete. Maybe keep them on as backstage agents. Team 3D - maybe its their competiton (see above) but they simply don't have it anymore "The Band" - although they aren't officially on the roster, that is the angle that has been drawn out so long that I don't care either way. Also Hall has done nothing but throw tooth picks since being back.
In the category of I simply don't like:
Consequences Creed - bad gimick, also fits in the undertilized Jesse Neal - when you look like a create-a-wrestler from a video game, your simply not going to get over Jay Lethal - pretending to be the Macho Man is getting old...had one good storyline in his entire TNA career (SoCal Val/Sonjay Dutt)
What are your thoughts, please leave your comments below and who would you cut from any of the rosters. Until next time...
Welcome to another edition of "The Hawk's Nest with Tito". This week I am going to look in no particular order of my top 5 favorite "sports entertainers" in TNA & WWE. For WWE some of their talent won't get a fair shake as it has been months since I have watched Smackdown, so anyone on that show won't make my top 5. Anyway as Casey Kaseum would say (I guess Ryan Seacrest these days) lets get the countdown underway.
5. The Pope - This is one of my favorite characters right now across all of wrestling. When the Pope first debuted this gimick I will admit I was not a fan but ever since Bischoff/Hogan took over some of the creative standpoints of TNA this is clearly a winner. He is decent in the ring and cuts one of the best promo's in all of wrestling. Not to mention he is clearly over in the Impact Zone, a place where there are probably as many non-wrestling fans as wrestling fans in the building due to the way TNA and Universal Studios hands out the free tickets. He is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
4. Ken Anderson - Another one of my favorites dating back to his days in WWE. He at one point in WWE was heading to be a main eventer though when he failed their drug testing after being one of the mouth pieces to the mainstream media after the Chris Benoit incident, he never seemed to get a push again. (Maybe some of the NXT guys should take notice). That said his current fued with Kurt Angle is being done very well and his "Total Non-stop Anderson" line was classic.
3. Triple H - At least the DX version. Now that they seemed to yet again break up DX it will be interesting to see where they take his character. Hopefully he remains the wisecracking guy he is in DX and not the "King of Kings" angry guy they have him recently when he is away from DX. Also what happens to Hornswoggle now that DX is broken up...more importantly why do I care?
2. Randy Orton - From Bad Blood 2003 he began his journey to being one of the better guys in the business of sports entertainment. I was at that PPV and the promo he cut that night took him to a completly new level not to mention put some life into a what was a dead crowd to that point. Today his character is one of the most interesting in the WWE, especially now that it seems they have finally broken up Legacy. Unfortunatley WWE missed the opportunity to switch him and Cena last year when they had a chance. Orton is ready to become one of the biggest faces in the WWE, to a level not seen since The Rock & Stone Cold.
1. Kurt Angle - He is one of the main reasons TNA is where it is today. He was one of the biggest signings the company had made at the time and possibly still is (even bigger than the Hogan deal). Not only that he has reinvinted himself once again. From the Angle Aliance to the Main Event Mafia no other version of Kurt Angle is as compelling as his current storyline and character. The promo he cut two weeks ago is one of the best and most realistic I've seen in wrestling in a long time. It was done in a way that was not too over the top and seemed genuine, which is what wreslting is needing. Also it seems to have all but dropped the who screwed me angle between him and Hogan now that Mr. Anderson has him involved in a fued that can go someplace.
Please let me know what you think by leaving a comment below. In the next Hawk's Nest I will look at 5 wrestlers on each brand that I would cut from the company. Also coming up in a couple of weeks will be the debut of our weekly live podcast, Wrestling Classics with myself and Dave as hosts. Keep checking out the website for more details. Until next time...
